Care and setup: projectors and night lights

Getting the best from star, galaxy and ripple projectors, motion night lights and the floating moon.

Setup and care for star, galaxy, sunset and water ripple projectors, motion-sensor night lights and the floating moon lamp, with a troubleshooting table at the end. Where products differ, the product page and the manual have the exact figures for yours. For the differences between projector types, see Projector lights explained.

Setting up a star or galaxy projector

  • Make the room dark. With the main light on, you'll mostly see the lamp glowing, not the pattern.
  • Find a plain surface. A smooth, light-colored ceiling or wall shows the pattern most clearly. Ripple and cut-out lamps need a wall or ceiling close by.
  • Set the distance. Closer gives a smaller, sharper picture; further, a larger, softer one. Stay within any range the product page lists.
  • Focus, where it's adjustable. Set the distance first, then turn the focus ring.
  • Discs and film cards: hold them by the edges and slide them fully into place.
  • Cables: a USB-powered projector needs a USB charger within reach. Run the cable along the wall, away from children and pets.

Remotes and timers

Point the remote at the lamp from inside the room, and remove any plastic pull-tab from the battery compartment first. Some remotes need a battery that isn't included; the product page says so. Keep remote batteries, especially coin or button cells, away from children.

Where a projector has an auto-off timer, its product page lists the settings. If yours doesn't mention one, switch it off yourself.

Motion-sensor night lights

  • Range and angle: each product page lists the sensor's range and angle. Place the light where you'll walk toward or across it, within that range.
  • Dark only: some sensor lights, or some of their modes, only switch on in the dark. Where the product page says so, test it at night, not in daylight.
  • Mode switch: if there's a switch for always on, auto and off, set it to auto for motion sensing.
  • Delay: the light switches itself off a short time after movement stops. The product page gives the time.
  • False triggers: if it comes on with nobody there, move it away from heaters, vents and the pet's usual route.

The floating moon lamp

A floating moon, like the Nocturne – Floating Moon Lamp, hovers above its base on a magnetic field.

  1. Set the base on a level, steady surface with clear space around it, and plug it in.
  2. Hold the moon in both hands just above the center of the base, and lower it slowly until you feel it being held.
  3. Ease it until it feels balanced, then let go gently. If it pulls to one side, try again nearer the center.
  • Keep the base level, and keep other magnets and metal objects away. They can pull the moon off balance.
  • Lift the moon off before you unplug the base, so it doesn't drop.
  • Keep magnetic lamps out of reach of small children.

How it works: How does a floating moon lamp work?

Cleaning lenses and acrylic

Switch off and unplug first. Wipe lenses, domes and acrylic with a soft, dry microfiber cloth and light pressure. No sprays, glass cleaner, alcohol or paper towels, which can scratch. A puff of air clears dust from a lens. Wood and bamboo parts need only a dry cloth.

Troubleshooting

Problem Try this
Projection looks blurry Adjust the focus if there is one, change the distance, wipe the lens, and check the disc is fully in place.
Projection is faint Darken the room, move closer to the surface, turn up the brightness, and aim at a plain, light-colored surface.
Remote doesn't work Check the battery and pull-tab, move closer, or replace the battery. Use the switch on the lamp meanwhile, if it has one.
Projector switches itself off A timer may be set; check the timer setting. A rechargeable lamp may need charging.
Motion light won't come on Set the switch to auto, charge it, and test it in the dark, within the sensor's range.
Motion light comes on by itself Check it isn't set to always on, and move it away from heat sources, vents and pets.
Moon won't float or keeps dropping Check the base is plugged in and level. Lower the moon slowly over the center, and move metal and magnets away.
