Care and setup: cordless and rechargeable lamps

A charge now and then and a dry cloth: everything a cordless lamp needs, from the first charge to a quick fix.

A cordless lamp asks for very little: a charge now and then and a dry cloth. This page covers how to care for a cordless, rechargeable lamp from the first charge onward, with a troubleshooting table at the end. Where lamps differ, the product page and the manual have the exact figure for yours.

Before first use

  • Charge it in full before the first evening, so you start with the whole battery.
  • Charging times differ from lamp to lamp. Check the product page for yours, and if it asks for a longer first charge, follow that.

Charging a cordless lamp

Lamps charge over USB, either through a USB-C port or with the cable that came in the box. Some use a lead into the side of the base, others a magnetic plug. Connect the cable to a standard 5V USB adapter, such as a phone charger, or to a laptop USB port. Most of our lamps don't include a wall adapter. If you need one, we sell the UGREEN 20W USB-C + USB-A Charger.

  • Charge on a dry, hard surface where you can see it.
  • Push the plug fully home. A half-seated plug is a common reason a lamp seems not to charge.
  • Unplug once it's full.

Touch controls and dimming

Most cordless lamps have a touch point on the base or top. The usual pattern is a tap to switch on or off and a press-and-hold to dim, but it varies. Some step through set brightness levels, some dim smoothly and remember your last setting, some need a longer hold to switch on or off, and a few use a button or a remote instead. The product page lists your lamp's controls. Use a dry, bare fingertip: gloves and damp hands don't register well.

Getting the most from the battery

  • Brightness matters most. Runtime is usually given as a range because a low glow runs far longer than full brightness.
  • Top up before it's flat when you can, rather than running it to empty every time.
  • Keep it out of the heat: not on a sunny windowsill, by a radiator or in a hot car. Cold rooms shorten runtime too.
  • Expect gradual change. All rechargeable batteries slowly lose capacity with use.

Cleaning by material

Switch the lamp off and unplug the cable first. Use a soft, dry cloth, and keep liquids and sprays well away from the charging port.

  • Metal: a dry microfiber cloth for dust and fingerprints. No polish or abrasive cleaners, which can mark the finish.
  • Glass and acrylic: a dry microfiber cloth. Skip glass cleaner and alcohol, especially on acrylic, which scratches and clouds easily.
  • Stone and marble: a dry cloth only. Acidic or abrasive cleaners, vinegar and lemon included, can dull natural stone.
  • Wood: dust along the grain with a dry cloth. Keep it away from water and long hours of direct sun.
  • Fabric shades: a lint roller or a soft, clean brush. Don't wet or wash the shade.

Storing a lamp for a while

Putting a lamp away for a season? Charge it to about half, switch it off, and store it somewhere cool and dry. Top it up every few months so the battery doesn't sit empty, then give it a full charge before you use it again.

Troubleshooting

Problem Try this
Won't turn on Charge it in full, then try again. Check whether it needs a tap or a longer press, and whether there's a switch on the base or back.
Won't charge Seat the plug fully and check the port for lint. Try another cable and a wall adapter rather than a TV or sleeping laptop port. With a magnetic plug, make sure it has snapped into place.
Flickers Often a low battery, so charge it. Some lamps have a breathing mode that fades on purpose; check the mode. If it flickers only while charging, try another adapter. If it still flickers when full, contact us.
Touch not responding Use a dry, bare fingertip and wipe the touch point. Unplug the cable and try again, then charge it in full.
Battery runs down fast Lower the brightness and keep it out of cold rooms. Make sure it's reaching a full charge. If the runtime drops sharply, contact us.

Still not right?

Email support@duskhavenhome.com with your order number, a short description and, if you can, a photo or short video.
