A lamp is a gift that gets used. It comes on every evening, on a nightstand or a shelf, and the person who opened it thinks of you a little each time. This gift guide gathers our favorite lamp gift ideas for the holidays, sorted first by budget and then by the person you're shopping for. None of it is tied to one season, so it works just as well for birthdays, housewarmings and thank-yous.

The centerpiece: a moon that floats

If you want one gift that makes people stop and look, start with Nocturne – Floating Moon Lamp ($149). The 14 cm moon hovers about 1–1.5 cm above its wood-look base and turns slowly, glowing in warm white, cool white or natural. Nothing holds it up. It plugs in with the included adapter (US plug), so it wants a spot near an outlet. If you're wondering how it stays up, we explain in How does a floating moon lamp work?

Gift ideas under $50

  • Ember – Cordless Table Lamp, $30. A warm filament lamp with no cord, easy to carry from desk to nightstand to porch. It runs 5–30 hours a charge.
  • Harvest – Moon Lamp, $39. A 15 cm 3D-printed moon with raised craters on a wooden stand, cordless and dimmable. Lovely on a bookshelf or in a child's room.
  • Solari – 16-Color Sunset Lamp, $30. Casts a glowing sunset onto the wall, with 16 colors on a remote. A good one for a teenager or anyone who likes taking photos.
  • Grove – Birch Tree Light, from $25. Warm white LEDs along slender birch branches. It suits the season now and can stay out all year, on USB or batteries.

Gift ideas from $50 to $100

Gift ideas from $100 to $200

  • Nocturne, $149. The floating moon above, and a gift few people already own.
  • Starfall – Galaxy Nebula Projector, $119. For the stargazer. It casts a nebula and starfield across the ceiling, with 13 discs to swap and an auto-off timer.
  • Vesper – Cordless Stone Table Lamp, $120. A column of natural stone under a linen shade, so no two are quite alike. Cordless, rated at 5–45 hours a charge depending on brightness.

Worth the splurge

  • Aria – Marble & Glass Table Lamp, $350. An opal-glass shade on a column of marble, cordless, in 3000 K warm white. A lamp someone notices every time they pass the console.
  • Veil – Marble Cordless Table Lamp, from $200. Marble under an opal-white shade, with a brass-colored touch cap and a rated 8–12 hours a charge. The veining differs from lamp to lamp.

Gifts by person

  • For the one who has everything: Nocturne. A moon that floats is rarely already on the shelf.
  • For a new home: a cordless lamp, because the outlets are never quite where the furniture ends up. Ember for a smaller budget, Vesper for something special. Our guide to lighting a rental without any wiring has more ideas.
  • For kids: Perch for the bedside, or Harvest for a shelf. Both are cordless, so there's no cable trailing from the table.
  • For the desk: Twist – Retro Spiral Desk Lamp ($35). A coiled retro shape with warm, neutral and cool white, so it handles work and winding down.
  • For the garden or patio: Cove – Solar Wicker Garden Lantern ($75). A woven lantern about 68 cm tall that charges in daylight and needs no wiring. Solar lights get less sun in winter, so it's worth reading what to expect.

A gift tip: check the plug

Several of these lamps charge or run over USB and don't include a wall adapter in the box. Any USB phone charger works, so it's worth tucking one in or mentioning it on the card. Each product page says what's included.
